Ähnlich wie der Muttertag gehört der Marienmonat zum Brauchtum der Kirche. Es hat sich so ergeben, ist so gewachsen und entwickelt sich irgendwie immer weiter.
Brauchtum heißt, dass Brauch und Sitte ist, was getan wird. Brauchtum heißt zugleich, dass das irgendwie nicht „von oben“ angeordnet ist, sondern aus dem Herzen der Menschen heraus geschieht und aufrecht erhalten wird.
So können wir das vielleicht auch mit dem Marienmonat Mai sehen. Ich habe das Lied „Maria Maienkönigin“ einmal mit einem lieben alten Mann auf dessen Sterbebett gesungen. Wir haben es ganz leise gesungen, allein er und ich; Er konnte es nur noch mitsummen, weil er sehr schwach war. Fünf Minuten darauf schlief er in sanftem Frieden ein.
Dieses, sein Lied, war ihm, das wusste ich, von Kindertagen an, irgendwie ins Herz geschrieben. Er hatte es einfach lieb, weil er auch die Mutter Gottes einfach lieb hatte.
Theologische Erwägungen hatte er nie gekannt, sondern hatte seinen Glauben ganz und gar im Brauchtum gelebt, bis zum Ende.
Was ich bewunderte, war, dass er früher immer diese sichere Spürnase hatte für gut und richtig; was gesund war und was nicht mehr. Ganz ohne hohe Wissenschaft. Er hatte „im kleinen Zeh“ irgendwie mehr Theologie als die Gelehrten. So hieß es immer.
Ähnlich sagt es auch einer der größten unserer Professoren:
„Eine alte Frau ist in ihrem Glauben der Wahrheit oft näher als alle Philosophen“, sagt Thomas in einer Predigt.
